A Decade of Progress and a Clear Vision for the Future

Posted on Monday, July 07 2025

As the Myasthenia Alliance Australia (MAA) marks over ten years of advocacy, research, and awareness, our latest Achievements Poster offers a powerful snapshot of what a committed patient-led movement can accomplish.

From grassroots fundraising to national policy impact, MAA’s journey is one of collaboration, determination, and progress. Since its inception in 2014 as a partnership between the NSW and Queensland MG associations, MAA has worked tirelessly to ensure the voice of Australians living with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is not just heard, but acted upon.

What We’ve Achieved Together

In just a few years, we’ve helped fundraise for the launch of MGBase, the first international registry dedicated to MG, providing critical real-world data to improve care and outcomes globally. We’ve held four national MG patient conferences and facilitated vital research that has shaped clinical understanding and influenced care pathways.

Our advocacy has seen Rituximab listed on the PBS for MG patients, and helped contribute to recommendations that four additional therapies – FcRn and complement inhibitors – be made accessible in Australia. We’ve also actively contributed to government inquiries, national policy reviews, and established key partnerships with Rare Voices Australia, the Neurological Alliance Australia, and the OPTIMAL Centre of Research Excellence.

And through campaigns like Art with Heart, we’ve celebrated the MG community while raising national awareness and essential funds.

Where We’re Headed in 2025

Our work is far from done.

This year, our mission is to continue advocating for equitable access to emerging MG therapies, and to expand education and awareness through a dedicated webinar series for patients and families. We’re also finalising a website upgrade that will better connect our community with resources, updates, and opportunities to participate in research.

Research remains at the heart of our mission. We’ll be completing several key projects and actively exploring new areas of investigation to improve the lives of those affected by MG.

Thank You for Being Part of the Journey

Everything we’ve achieved has been made possible by the strength of our community … from the individuals who share their stories and raise their voices, to the clinicians, researchers, and policymakers who walk alongside us. As we look toward the next chapter, we invite you to continue this journey with us.
